Mark at the Observatory in Onsala in September 2019.
Mark Birkinshaw was a Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics at the University of Bristol, UK. Since 2019, he held an affiliated position at Chalmers as a Hasselblad Professor. Mark was a passionate radio astronomer, engaged in many projects, from the European Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) to the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA). His death in 2023 left an immense void in our scientific communities.
Mark was also an active member of XXL, an international multiwavelength collaboration led by Marguerite Pierre, to investigate clusters of galaxies and active galactic nuclei and place constraints on the cosmological parameters. XXL is now evolving into a new consortium named FornaX, focused on extragalactic and cosmological studies, from X-rays to radio, of a 10-deg2 XMM-Euclid Deep Field located in the southern sky.
With this workshop, we want to honor Mark’s memory in a positive and forward-looking way, reflecting on some of our common research projects and on the work ahead in rapidly developing areas of extragalactic astronomy.
We are grateful to the Hasselblad foundation for financial support.
