The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is an international project to build the largest radio telescope in the world. The project officially began construction on 5 Dec 2022 to build a mid-frequency telescope in South Africa and a low-frequency array in Australia, and is aiming for first light with 4 dishes and 6 stations in 2025. Science Operations and the definition of Key Science Projects are expected to commence later in the decade.
The scientific motivation for building the SKA spans from cosmology and the early Universe, through galaxy evolution, to stellar astrophysics and planet formation. SKA science is motivated by fundamental physics of gravity and magnetism, multi-disciplinary fields such as astrochemistry, and will record events occurring on timescales of Gyr to submilliseconds. The broad range of science areas are reflected in the SKA Science Working Groups.
The purpose of this meeting is to bring together researchers and Swedish industry partners working in SKA-related science, technology, and algorithm development. We welcome international contributions, and especially encourage participation from our colleagues in other Nordic countries. We particularly encourage early career researchers to submit abstracts and attend the meeting: after all, the SKA era will be yours to build!
The goals of the Second National SKA Sweden Day(s) are:
- Present the scientific community with SKA activities currently underway in Sweden including participation in SKA Science Data Challenges, industry contributions, and ongoing development towards the Swedish node of the SKA Regional Center Network.
- Share results from SKA precursors and pathfinders, theoretical/simulation studies, and planning of complementary use with other astronomical facilities (e.g. ALMA, Euclid, JWST, 4MOST, etc). Contributors are also encouraged to present their work in a synergistic and/or prospective manner with regards to what the SKA will bring.
- Encourage scientific collaborations among groups interested in answering questions with SKA precursors/pathfinders and the next generation of SKA radio surveys.
The meeting will include both invited and contributed talks, time for discussions, and hands-on session(s) (TBD). The meeting is being held at Veras Gräsmatta located at Chalmers University. The unique conference space is designed to encourage interactions and discussions.
Participants are expected to follow SKAO Code of conduct for meetings and events.
